What is Randi's Room?

We are working on an exciting project to bring a children's recreation room to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The recreation room will have music, computers, and games specifically for teenagers who are undergoing treatment at Children's. The space will be known as Randi's Room to honor a dear friend who passed away suddenly at age 35 of cardiac arrest. Randi was involved in our community in many ways, but she was most devoted to helping children with cancer. She was an active fundraiser, but also spent time one-on-one with these children to help improve the quality of their lives. Randi's hospital parties brought engaging activities and holiday fun to children challenged by ongoing cancer treatment. Randi's Room could not be a better tribute to her spirit and generosity.

Learn more about Randi's Room from the Children's National Medical Center Annual Report.

About Randi

Randi Joy Waxman, professor, attorney and CPA died unexpectedly in 1999 of sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 35. Randi was a tireless proponent of children's causes. Her charitable involvement included serving as co-chair of the D.C. Children's Cancer Foundation, legal counsel for RESOLVE (an organization that assists parents with adoption), Chairperson of the first annual DCBIA Community Improvement Day (renovating the Sasha Bruce House for Homeless Teenagers), and organizer of hospital programs for juvenile cancer patients. Randi also helped spearhead a committee to establish a scholarship program for deserving children.

As an associate business professor at Columbia Union College, Randi impacted her students' lives dramatically. She was recognized as an exceptional professor whose passion for teaching inspired learning and the desire to excel. Outside the classroom, Randi was actively involved in campus life. She participated on faculty committees (including chair of the committee for academic honesty), organized student class trips and served as faculty sponsor of the C.U.C. Business Club. Students and faculty relied on Randi for her sound advice, quick analytical skills and intelligent solutions to difficult problems. Her everyday words of encouragement and "can-do" attitude inspired students to do their best and to reach for the stars.

Randi believed strongly in helping abused, ill and underprivileged children. She helped us appreciate more fully how fortunate we are in our daily lives and the importance of giving. Her memory lives on in all who knew her and will be cherished in our hearts forever. The Randi Joy Waxman Memorial Foundation, Inc. has been established to carry on her mission and the "sparkle" she possessed for helping others. Foundation funds will be used to support various children's causes, including cancer research, local area scholarships, recreational and educational facilities for children. Randi is survived by her husband, two daughters, a sister and her parents.
